Dogs Eat Bananas: Veterinarian Study Edition

After years of letting our dogs eat pieces of banana every day because it’s fun, it turns out that vets recommend it now.

There’s been some new studies showing that a daily slice or two of banana gives dogs potassium, and helps them avoid various gut problems. And now that I think about it, our family dogs haven’t normally tried to eat grass or had a lot of diarrhea, ever since Dad started donating a bit of his daily banana to be the dogs’ daily banana. (Although it might also be shifting to a better grade of dog food. Lamb and rice is better for dogs’ stomachs.)

The vets recommend that small dogs be given their banana slices mashed, but that seems like a lot of trouble unless you’re giving it to a puppy. If you’ve got a tiny dog who might choke on it or wolf it down too fast, I’d think you could just chunk the banana slice into thirds, as bananas naturally do. But whatever you think best, of course.

It also turns out that sharing bananas with your dog is an old showdog trick for giving your dog a little energy boost.
