Q: My dog has diarrhea. What should I do?

A: Good question. We’ve had a lot of people coming into the store with that problem lately.

There are multiple reasons why your dog has diarrhea or loose stools. Some of which include:

• Too much protein.

Your dog’s food might contain too much protein or he’s had too many treats in the day and his food hasn’t been cut back to accommodate. Try to cut back on his food and eliminate treats for a few days and see if that makes a difference.

• Parasites.

Dogs will eat almost anything, including feces or dead stuff. If you suspect your dog might have parasites, there are several natural remedies available for your dog, such as Omega Alpha’s Para-Free™.

• Ate something she shouldn’t.

Again, some dogs will eat almost anything and if something she ate isn’t agreeing with her, her body is trying to get rid of it. Like us, a dog’s system might need to be reset. Fast her for 24 hours, providing only plenty of fresh water (preferably filtered). After that, try a bland diet of boiled meat and rice for a few days.

  • On medication or eats kibble exclusively.

If a dog is on a prescription medication, or is on a regular kibble diet, his system might be stressed, causing diarrhea. A good probiotic with prebiotics and fibre can help with that.

There are other reasons as to why your dog might experience diarrhea, such as changes in food or he’s experiencing stress.  If you need to talk to someone, please feel free to come into the store and we’ll help you work through it.
