Let the Dog Rest
If the dog is not as active as usual, has lost its appetite, is vomiting, has a fever, is passing tarry stools or has blood in its stool, rest is needed. The dog also needs to see a veterinarian so dehydration can be prevented and the cause of the diarrhea can be determined.
Let the Dog Play
If the dog has a normal appetite, wants to play or go for a walk and seems otherwise normal, then the dog does not need to rest. Many episodes of diarrhea resolve on their own within 24 hours.
Bottom Line
A dog with diarrhea needs to be observed. If the dog is as active as ever and shows no signs of pain or fatigue, you do not need to make the dog rest. But if the dog is not behaving normally and has other medical symptoms, call the veterinarian.
